Welcome to Virtual CELEBRATION 2023
Celebration, Sealaska Heritage’s biennial festival of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures, has been held in Juneau, Alaska, every even year since 1982. After the Coronavirus pandemic caused the institute to postpone the in-person event for 2023, Sealaska Heritage organized its first-ever Virtual Celebration June 10-13 in an effort to bring people together online. The theme was “Have Courage,” a phrase commonly used to offer support and encouragement to one another during times of sadness or challenge. Virtual Celebration included dance performances from Celebration 2018 and new content such as videos of people telling stories, greetings from dance groups. and submissions from people around the region. The entire four-day broadcast can be viewed on Sealaska Heritage’s YouTube channel.
Virtual Celebration also marked the launch of SHI’s first online exhibit, the 10th biennial Northwest Coast Juried Art Show, which can be accessed below, along with our Indigenous Fashion Show and Toddler Regalia Review. For more on Sealaska Heritage and Celebration, visit www.sealaskaheritage.org.

Sealaska Heritage held its first Northwest Coast Juried Art Show & Competition in 2002 to encourage artists to reach the highest standards achieved by our ancestors. Since then it has become a biennial event held during Celebration.

SHI sponsors an Indigenous Fashion Show as part of Celebration in an effort to showcase and encourage the integration of Alaska Native art into high-fashion pieces, with an emphasis on designs that display innovative use of traditional Indigenous styles and materials.

What is Celebration?
For four days every other June, the streets of Juneau fill with Native people of all ages dressed in the signature regalia of clans from throughout Southeast Alaska and beyond. There is traditional song and dance. Arts and crafts. Food. And people speaking local Native languages. This is Celebration, our biennial festival of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures.
